Linux is actually Windows - preposterous otherwise

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 22-Jan-2008 07:33

This is just too funny... Someone posted this on ZDNET:

Are you saying that this linux can run on a computer without windows underneath it, at all ? As in, without a boot disk, without any drivers, and without any services ?

That sounds preposterous to me.

If it were true (and I doubt it), then companies would be selling computers without a windows. This clearly is not happening, so there must be some error in your calculations. I hope you realise that windows is more than just Office ? Its a whole system that runs the computer from start to finish, and that is a very difficult thing to acheive. A lot of people dont realise this.

Microsoft just spent $9 billion and many years to create Vista, so it does not sound reasonable that some new alternative could just snap into existence overnight like that. It would take billions of dollars and a massive effort to achieve. IBM tried, and spent a huge amount of money developing OS/2 but could never keep up with Windows. Apple tried to create their own system for years, but finally gave up recently and moved to Intel and Microsoft.

Its just not possible that a freeware like the Linux could be extended to the point where it runs the entire computer fron start to finish, without using some of the more critical parts of windows. Not possible.

The original actually is here, where you can find other "gems" of knowledge:

Hey, I’m new here. A while ago I tried to talk to a bunch of people on another board and they were telling me Linux is not a Windows program. I’m here to prove them wrong.

Linux will have to find a way to work under Vista from here on, since it wont be able to rely on XP being readily available anymore.

Linux may seem like a good alternative to Office, but all that is happening in linux is that the windows interface is cleverly hidden away. It still needs the drivers and software services in order to run, and in most cases - that happens WITHOUT a valid windows licence.

This is just plain piracy.

Another probable reason for the failure to install is because your machine was running too fast - linux works best on machines around the 1GHz mark, and would be very unstable running on a 3GHz machine.

If this is linkbait, he succeeded brilliantly. Otherwise I would say someone forgot to take the meds...

I have been running Vista for ages now so I guess I am out of luck for loading linux on it. I can't believe that so many of those people think it can run without XP. I heard it only runs on XP Pro can someone tell me if the latest Linux release runs on XP home too? If they don't make their Linux program compatible to run on Vista they will never sell a single copy of it. No wonder everyone pirates Linux. Sheesh.

Oh my God.

Still, perhaps it's a timely reminder that concepts we take for granted are still unknown to many people.

I cringe at the thought of the fun the Linux folk will have with this.

OMG, that is beyond hilarious...

well, it could be management staff used to a big licencing portion of the IT/IS budget suddenly not being needed.. I'd be confused in those shoes too.

OMG guys this is so hilarios. Trying to say Linux does not run without Windows. Its too hilarios. You people are pathatic and realy need some thing to fuck with. Go get an girlfriend and fuck here leggs out.

Linux is open source. And does not require anny 3th party like Windows. It boots on Grub or Lilo. And it uses an LINUX kernel (www.kernel.org)

Learn history guys... I lolled so hard i broke my jaws of laufing

That was fun.

For those who think that linux is a software program that run under windows, please got http://linux.org and get a brief history.

Linux is an operating system just like windows folks. It does not need windows to run.

It has everything that you need including an office package (openoffice.org). If you are curious, please visit http://ubuntu.com download the ISO and I promise you will never pay for windows again.

By the way Dell is selling linux preloaded.

@Delirium, it seems you completely fail to understand these are quotes - this is not what we wrote or what we thing.

I recommend you read the post again, because you missed the point.

this is hillarious.
love it that people out there can be so...  entertaining in their misguided thoughts.  I know I have my moments.

I can see this is one of those pieces that just keeps on giving :-)

On reflection this sad, misguided soul does seem a lot like one of those "I've used Excel macros so you worthless techie types can't pull the wool over *my* eyes" managers. As confirmed by his (cringe...it's always a "he", isn't it?) obvious urge to speak authoritatively about things he knows nothing at all about.

HA HA this is so funny man, how ignorance reigns in the world of windows, and that is the goal of Microsoft: TO HAVE AN IGNORANT POPULATION THAT RELAYS ON ITS SERVICES TO LIVE< SO THAT THEY HAVE TO BE PAYING FOR EVERYTHING THEY DO. .....

Hey, in the other hand we have Generation Linux: People that know 1.what they want 2.what they need and last but not least 3.how to admin their money. ...... AMEN

On YouTube, there is this big guy who is licking and kissing a rubber chicken. Now the reality part about that is he may be smarter than me and you...and has gone over the deep end because of it. They say if you use to much of your brain, you become nutty. Just look at Einstine and a few other great smart people. They got a nutty side to them. hehehee...

Oh my GOd.... I would have never thought that people that ignorant could actually exist for real!! :D
Too bad I cannot find the discussion you pointed to anymore. Wow man, that was incredible... but very sad too IMHO :(
I really feel bad when I see things like this, specially because I'm the creator of a Linux distro, OpenGEU... so I'd think that anyone in the world knows Linux is an OS.... my God...
