Thanks to Dell, another gigantic giveaway coming to Geekzone

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 14-May-2008 12:13

I am bit busy today and had planned to post some reviews but will have to do it tomorrow. In the meantime I will let you know what's happening next after the review is posted.

Dell sent me a Dell 1320c colour laser printer for review and giveaway on Geekzone. The printer is impressive and produces brilliant pages - sorry you know my review is going to say this but wait for more.

Now comes the surprise bit: we have not one, but three Dell 1320c colour laser printers to giveaway on Geekzone, so keep an eye in our main Geekzone RSS feed because the competition will be up soon.

Geekzone Pizza evening - Auckland and Christchurch next

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 13-May-2008 20:04

When we decided to run a Geekzone Pizza evening in Wellington back in April (pictures) we decided to limit the numbers to 50 - and I had phone calls on the day from people wanting to join us. The prize list was incredible - and thanks to our sponsors (pizza by WorldxChange, beer by 3Bit and Google) it was a huge success.

We had so much fun that it wasn't hard to convince me to extend this to Auckland (26th May, fully booked) and Christchurch (5th July, almost full).

Again we have a healthy sponsors list and I will copy the current list here:

Auckland Sponsors:

Pizza: Telecom New Zealand is paying for the pizza.

Drinks: 3Bit and Sprite Software are sponsoring the drinks.

Prize pool:

920 Career Agents are bringing Guitar Hero Legends of Rock 3 (game and guitar controller) for PS3 and Xbox 360 (check their IT Rock Star promo).

iway Computer is giving away an AverTV Hybrid Speedy PCI-e DVB-T card.

McAfee is giving us a few copies of McAfee 2008 Total Protection.

Quay Corp is giving us a Targus laptop bag to giveaway during the event.

Christchurch Sponsors:

Pizza: IT Maniacs is contributing towards the pizza.

Drinks: OnlineGroups.Net is contributing towards the drinks.

Prize pool:

McAfee is giving us three copies of McAfee 2008 Total Protection.

Microsoft NZ is giving us three copies of Windows Live OneCare and one copy of Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1.

Quay Corp is giving us a Targus laptop bag to giveaway during the event.

PC Gear is giving us a Logitech G15 keyboard, two Kingston 2GB Data Traveler USB drive, and Ages of Empires 3 Gold Edition (including War Chiefs expansion).

The big prize for the evening will be a Xbox 360 courtesy of PC Gear. To get the winner started Microsoft NZ is throwing some games: Mass Effect, PGR 4 and Viva Pinata Party Animals.

One of the cool things is that we have a few people that are actually attending all three events, flying around the country for the pizza, beer and company!

As you can see we still need some help in Christchurch - I am looking for companies interested in sponsoring the pizza (sharing with IT Maniacs) and drinks. You can contact me for more information - it costs way less than you think!

Geekzone is a Hitwise No1 Award Winner!

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 8-May-2008 12:32

Loading... I am pleased to say Geekzone has received an award from Hitwise - during 2007 Geekzone ranked #1 on market share of visits among all New Zealand websites in the News and Media - IT Media industry segment.

Add to that the exceptional Nielsen//NetRatings numbers - month after month Geekzone has been #1 in unique browser for total traffic for a New Zealand-based website in the Technology segment - and I can only be happy.

Really folks - thanks to you!

Building on-line communities

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 28-Apr-2008 20:15

Wow... Thanks Ben Kepes for these kind words!

...It’s interesting to note the number of high level executives from New Zealand Telcos who spend time on Geekzone - sometimes the discussions there challenge them but better to be challenged and know what the market thinks than to exist with a “head buried in the sand” attitude.

...I agree entirely - Mauricio, whether you call him ambassador or figurehead or whatever of Geekzone, is front and centre as the leader in terms of direction and strategy. Similarly Richard McManus over on ReadWriteWeb.

Thank you everyone who reads my blog and follow Geekzone - for your help building Geekzone up over the years was most valuable.

All the best to everyone!

Monday morning you will find out more about this prize pool...

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 26-Apr-2008 19:01

This is going to be really cool. We will see a winner, every day for 31 days. Literally thousands of dollars of prizes and I think you will like the prizes.

Come back Monday morning to find out more.

UPDATE: Here you can read more about the 31 Days of the Dragon.

Help bring the Sci Fi channel to Sky

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 23-Apr-2008 12:45

A discussion started on Geekzone a few days ago, asking people for opinions and help trying to get the Sci Fi channel into the Sky TV channel line up.

This is not a new topic, and it was discussed already almost a year ago. Apparently someone was told by Sky that "Sci Fi channel is a niche channel" - which is something I disagree with.

This time someone started an on-line petition - and the number of signatures is quite good now. You can help by signing the online petition to bring the Sci Fi channel to Sky TV.

Geekzone Pizza evening is full

By Mauricio Freitas, in , posted: 4-Apr-2008 20:14

While chatting in the #geekzone IRC channel we decided it was time for Geekzone users to get together again for some geek talk, dinner and drinks.

As soon as we decided on a date we had people sending SMS, IMs and Twitters to friends, booking flights to Wellington and soon after we announced the Geekzone Pizza evening in our forums we knew this would be big.

Well it is big. We are happy to announce we have now reached our self-imposed limit (and the venue capacity) of 45 confirmed people.

I am also happy to announce that a few companies joined us to sponsor this evening. So here is the list (a couple more may join later and I will update the post, but these are the confirmed ones at the time we closed registrations):

The first to come on board sponsoring the pizza is WorldxChange!

Then in alphabetical order:

3Bit will be present and is sponsoring drinks;

ASUS is giving an ASUS Eee PC (Windows version) away;

Dell is giving a Dell Photo Printer away;

Google is sponsoring drinks - and expect some Google swag on the night;

Microsoft is giving away a couple of copies of Windows Vista Ultimate with SP1 and some other software;

QuayCorp will have a couple of people attending and are giving a Viewsonic vx2235wm widescreen monitor and a HP Deskjet F4185 printer away;

Telecom New Zealand is giving a couple of their mobile broadband express cards away.

As I said, we have a couple of still unconfirmed sponsors, and when or if they confirm I will update this post.

If your company wants to sponsor this evening with a prize, please contact me. I am sure you would get great exposure from this ;)
